When Clara wakes in an apartment with only fragments of her memory, a cybernetic caretaker named Wesley tells her she’s in quarantine for a lifesaving experimental treatment. He promises she’s safe—so long as she follows the rules.

No leaving the building. No meeting the other residents. No questions about the noises.

But the walls shake with inhuman growls. Something screams in the vents at night. And the pounding gnaws at her sanity.

As the days blur into weeks, Wesley becomes Clara’s anchor, her confidant, her only connection to a world she can no longer trust. Yet the more she clings to him, the more the cracks in her reality widen. What is this place? What is she becoming? And why does Wesley seem to care for her so deeply?

When love is the only thing that feels real, Clara must decide whether to believe the machine who comforts her… or the terror clawing at the walls.

Perfect for fans of Black Mirror and atmospheric sci-fi horror with a romantic edge.

Devlin fastened the buttons of his suit jacket. “How do I look? Suitable for drinks with the captain of a starship?”

“As much as I love you in a suit, and probably even more out of one, I do have to ask if it’s really the right attire for your new position.” Zal was sitting up in bed, his bright orange hair sticking out at all angles and looking like he’d not long before engaged in several rounds of energetic sex. Which was unsurprising because that was exactly what had happened.

“The Ministry said the office dress code extended to my position as Earth Ambassador, but you might have a point that I should probably consider this the equivalent of your dress uniform.”

“I don’t have one of those yet. While I wait, the closest thing I have are my ambassadorial robes or my formalwear. And the latter didn’t survive the evening after our leaving gala. The ship’s quartermaster told me in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t a seamstress when I asked him to repair the side seam that somehow got split.”

Devlin chuckled at the memory. They had thought it would be their last night together, with Zal leaving Earth at the end of his visit. At that time, Devlin thought he had no way to leave with him. They had been very enthusiastic. “You did get a bit excited, but at least you have a chance of repairing your robe; my poor shirt ended up being put in the rag recycling box.”

“I’m sure I can find a way to make it up to you.” Zal patted the space next to him on the bed with the point of his tail. “I promise not to damage the one you’re wearing.”

“Nice try, Zal, but you should be getting ready. You’re supposed to be my liaison officer, and I’ve got a drinks reception in my honour to attend. I don’t want to be late.”

Zal muttered something Devlin’s translator either couldn’t or wouldn’t translate but got out of bed. “We’ve plenty of time yet. Let me grab a quick shower. I can hardly turn up reeking of sex with a human.”

“For all the crew would know, the smell could be a new cologne you picked up on Earth.”

Zal laughed and stole a quick kiss as he headed to the bathroom, naked. “Eau d’Devlin does have a nice ring to it, but the last thing I want is someone else liking your scent. That, and your fuzziness, are all mine.”

Devlin loved the pattern of scales that ran over Zal’s skin and his tail which now, like often was the case, writhed as if it had a mind of its own. Zal was hairless and, because of it, had a fascination with Devlin’s body hair from the first time he’d got his hands on his hairy chest.

Staring around his new cabin, Devlin still couldn’t believe he was here. There was no mistaking that the vista outside his porthole was space. He was the first Earth Ambassador and would be travelling on this ship for the equivalent of ten Earth months before reaching Zal’s home world, Chroalia. The idea of all the fascinating people he would meet was the icing on the cake of being with Zal. They had thought it impossible, both having given up on finding their happy ever after, yet here they were.

A ping came from a panel on the wall by his bed. He wandered over to it. It pinged again, and he saw written in green font: incoming communication.

For want of a better option, he tapped the writing and when nothing happened there was a third ping. “Hello?” he tried.

The screen came to life and a face appeared. They had bright pink skin and a neatly trimmed purple beard but not a wisp of hair on their head, which made their ears look bigger than they were, especially with their elaborate earrings. “Ambassador Taylor?”

“Yes?”

“I am Dr Golic. You’re supposed to report to Medbay once you’ve settled into your cabin. Where is Lieutenant Catenmir? He was aware of the requirement.”

He had a vague recollection that he would have a medical once he came aboard, but Zal hadn’t said when. Zal was currently in his shower, removing the evidence of how they’d christened his new bed, and since no one was meant to know they were in a relationship yet, it might give the game away. “Er…”

“According to the location sensors he is in your cabin.”

“He’s just using the bathroom. Once he’s done, I’ll have him bring me to Medbay.”

“Good.” Dr Golic gave him a strange look, which Devlin couldn’t decipher. He suspected he was going to get quite a few of those in the first few weeks aboard ship. “Come immediately. That way I can take your base levels before they are contaminated from anything you might imbibe, as I understand you’ve a welcome reception to attend.”

“I’ll trot right along.”

“Walking will be acceptable, Mr Taylor. There is no need to engage in Earth equine activities.”

Rebecca Cohen spends her days dreaming of living in a Tudor manor house, or a Georgian mansion. Alas, the closest she comes to this is through her characters in her historical romance novels. She also dreams of intergalactic adventures and fantasy realms, but because she’s not yet got her space or dimensional travel plans finalised, she lives happily in leafy Hertfordshire, England, with her husband and young son. Release Blitz: Breaker by AK Nevermore

BREAKER by AK Nevermore is out now! Check out the spicy dystopian romance that’s available now in Kindle Unlimited!

Title: BREAKER
Author: AK Nevermore
Genre: Dystopian Sci-fi Romance
On an alternate earth, a cataclysm has altered a subset of the population. Talents are persecuted for their psychic and physical mutations, giving rise to two conflicting societies based upon maintaining genetic purity. And the Source, a shadowy corporate entity dependent upon the exploitation of captive Talents, is hunting them…

Self-exiled to the Outside, Flynn Scot is oath-bound to a life of strict penance.

Cursed with a vicious temper and haunted by the blood-stained debauchery of his past, Flynn’s sworn off women, whiskey, and violence, and doesn’t give a damn about whispers of the coming war. He sure as hell isn’t in the mood to make good on a debt when it’s called in, especially when playing white knight outs him as a Talent, and the damsel in distress as his soulmate.

On the run from her future as a broodmare for the Source, escaped Talent Kara Jester is no distressed damsel.

And the last thing she wants is to be trapped in a blizzard with a surly—and frustratingly captivating—thug. Without the suppression meds holding her libido in check, her biology’s primed to procreate, and Flynn’s growled assurances that he won’t touch her doesn’t match the hunger in his eyes.

It doesn’t align with what fate has in store for them, either.

With elite troops hot on their heels and the border set to close, it’s a race to the North, away from Kara’s horrific future and towards the dark past Flynn wants to keep buried. Clinging to the shreds of his oath, he’s forced to choose between protecting the woman he’s afraid to love and letting out the animal he swore he’d never be again. Either may destroy him, if Kara’s secrets don’t get them killed first.

In 2024, Dylan Mercer is the rising star of professional hockey, adored by fans and unmatched on the ice. Yet beneath the glitz of his burgeoning career lies a truth Dylan fears could derail everything: he's gay in a world where he fears coming out could mean the end of his career. After a tough practice session, Dylan’s discovery of a pair of vintage skates in an old locker sends him spiraling back in time to 1980, just before the US Olympic hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice.”

Thrown into an era where the stakes for being himself are even higher, Dylan finds an unexpected ally and more in Nico Santoro, a fellow player with secrets of his own. In the shadow of history, Dylan and Nico forge a bond that defies time, facing down prejudice and fear with the strength found in each other.

As Dylan grapples with his return to the present, he faces an impossible choice: a past world that ultimately learns to love openly because of his and Nico’s courage, or the present where he’s one of the brightest future hockey stars.

YES! I absolutely loved everything about this book. The magic, the romance, the story, and the characters. Nothing was left out and at the end, I had the biggest smile on my face. Declan Rhodes wowed me with this one and I couldn't put it down. The character development was steady and had the right crescendo. In addition, the story paced itself very well, and the world building was spot on. I was expecting a good story that maybe waded through the mud here and there because I've read other time travel stories, and something always feels like it is lacking with very few exceptions. But I didn't get that. I got so much more. You need to read this one for yourself. 5 stars!
Oh man. This story took me back to my teen years when I was a crazy fan of ice hockey. It also gave me flashbacks of when I was in high school and had friends who had to keep the same secret as Dylan.

This author did an incredible job of playing on my emotions. You go from disliking the MC to falling in love with him. You tear up one moment and laugh out loud the next. The fact I could fully engage all my emotions and felt all those feels just means this author wrote a great story. Well done!

"Yeah, Nico. I wouldn’t lie to you. I accidentally came here when I put on a pair of glowing skates, and now I don’t know how to get back…or when. I suspect it will happen soon, but…”

I stared at him with a dubious gaze. What he’d described was impossible. Maybe Kowalski and the guys were behind it all. They could have found a hockey guy from the city and paid him to throw me off.

It was time to challenge Dylan. “Prove it. Show me something futuristic, something undeniable.”

He hesitated for a moment. “My clothes are from 2024.”

I shrugged. “There’s nothing original about them other than sort of whacked-out styles. Jeans are jeans, and the shirt is cotton.”

“Oh,” he whispered, and he shoved his hand into his pocket. I leaned forward, hoping for a surprise. He pulled out the device he’d been holding when he first appeared in the locker room.

“This is a smartphone from 2024,” Dylan announced, puffing his chest out. It’s not just a phone; it’s a little computer that fits in your pocket, and it’s practically a window to the future.”

“Computer? That size?” I scoffed. I couldn’t hide my disbelief, but I also looked closely, thinking about the stories I could tell if I saw something nobody else in my time had seen.

He held the device out toward me. “You don’t believe me? Just watch.”

Everything was silent around us. The earth stood still. Dylan awakened his device, and the screen came to life. I took a step back. In James Bond movies, little machines like that could shoot to kill.

The thing glowed and displayed a bunch of colorful shapes, unlike anything I’d ever seen. It practically screamed modern technology.

My breath caught in my throat as I took a cautious step forward. Could what Dylan called a phone really be a gateway into a new world?

I was about to concede a slight chance that Dylan was telling the truth when the screen flickered, and then it went black. My heart sank.

“What happened? I want to see it. Turn it back on.”

Dylan frowned. “Damn…of course, the battery goes dead right at this minute, and I don’t have my charger.”

Working as a paranormal private investigator has its trials. I’m busy, which is excellent, but there are more people, alive and otherwise, after me than ever before. The Other Side has stepped up their game. The Fallen are trying to strong-arm me into joining their ranks; they feel I’m the perfect person to aid in their eventual rise to world power, and they don’t give a damn what I have to say about it. Then there’s the Catholic Church. Apparently, they’ve painted a giant bullseye on my back. That keeps you looking over your shoulder, I’ll tell you.

Oh, and did I mention the bastard who abandoned my mother and me when I was born wants to repair a relationship we never had in the first place?

Just another day in the life of Rian MacCaren—that’s me, by the way. I solve mysteries, and I see things… things other people don’t. First, dreams plagued me. Now they’ve escalated to visions. Aside from keeping myself alive, my next step is to use my gift, or curse however you want to look at it, to figure out who killed the woman we just discovered in the basement of an abandoned house. Who was she, and why is she dressed in a wedding gown?
I heard laughter from the other side of the screen. It wasn’t the kind that speaks of madness, but the evil supervillain type. While I love the sound of truth, this sound chilled me to the bones and left me unclean.

“Sister Catherine…I should’ve known. As for you, my little angel, I’ll send you back to heaven.”

“Not today, buddy.”

A ripping sound hit my ears as a clawed hand burst through the screen and wrapped around my neck. It pulled me through the wall that divided the confessional. I tried to struggle out of its grip, but the preacher held on for all he's worth. Yeah, that’s gonna leave a mark.

I kicked at his face in the hope he’d release his hold over my throat. “Sorry, but choking isn’t my thing.”

The priest slammed me against the wall, knocking what air I did have out of my lungs in one exhale. I switched the safety off my gun and tried to raise it. Let me tell you that trying to fight for your life while being choked wasn’t that easy. I tried, though. Look at me being all optimistic and shit.

The father saw the gun. His eyes widened in anger as if the weapon was an insult to the sanctuary of the church. I may have had a gun, but I wasn’t a pedophile molesting kids and stealing their life force from them. Nope, I was a simple angel trying to get by in the world. By get by, I mean shoot the bad guy and rescue the children, thereby being the hero that saves the day.

Whoever the priest had become gripped me harder and threw me through the confessional door with one movement. The cracking of the wood against my back hurt, and the sound of screaming reached my ears. What hurt the most was hitting the floor and sliding across the carpet. I also heard the sound of my gun as it fell from my hand, bumping into something.

Movement from in front of me caught my attention. I attempted to get up, but the ceiling above me spun like a top, and vertigo kept me from moving too much. Massaging my neck, I could breathe easier, but the joy of still being alive didn’t last long.

There he stood. The possessed priest looked like a devil out of a bad CW series. Both his arms stretched longer than natural and ended in clawed, veiny hands. The skin on his face looked tighter and a bit like leather. The look someone gets after they tan in one of those cancer coffins too long.
