As I’m taking photos of the art on the walls of the huge Reception Room, as per Pinkie’s request, vases of exquisite flowers on pedestals draw my attention. The arrangements of lilies, hydrangeas, white roses and other blossoms beckon. I take in the fresh, sweet, bouquet, redolent of spring days under our magnolia tree. If only I could have taken that tree with me when I sold the house.

Jacob walks toward me. When our eyes meet, he curls his lip in that irresistible way of his. I smile back.

“You’re so lovely. A flower in full bloom. Can I take your picture?” “Yes, please,” I say. I position myself in front of the arrangements.

I GET TO THE OFFICE AND DO MY USUAL routine: drop off Cassandra’s coffee, hang her dry cleaning in her office closet, start to set up her morning schedule and sync it to my own, then go through the emails. The contract for Twisted Souls is at the top of the list. I set it to print and head back to the printer room to retrieve it. When I get there, I find Kim, Jack’s admin, leaning against the copier in this tight as all hell pencil skirt with a high side slit that shows off her long legs. I can’t help but notice as she is sorta rocking it.

“Hey there, handsome.” She smirks, turning toward me. I look around, confused. Is she actually coming at me like that?

“Uh, hi. I need the printer.” I try and get past her, but she blocks my way.

“We got this pool going, see, the rumor is you're gay, but then I heard Jack say you’re doing Cassandra… So, tell me, because I’d like to win. Do you like pussy?”

My mouth hangs open as she undoes the top button of her blouse, exposing the black lace of her push-up bra and looking up at me with her deep green eyes. Standing up on her tiptoes, she kisses me! Her tongue slips into my mouth and for an instant, I forget where I am. She tastes like cherries. Her fingers fist into my hair and my dick twitches before I push her off.

“I- I can’t do this, Kim. Shit.” I turn from her. “Fuck, are you trying to get us fired?” I look around and see Jessica and Trish. They’re both laughing as I grab the files from the printer and covering my hardon, hastily make my way back to my desk. I hear Kim exclaim proudly that I’m definitely straight.

Fuck, now what do I do? They all saw that, saw her kiss me! The rumors are gonna fly and what’s worse is I kissed back! God damn it, I gotta tell Cassandra. She can’t hear it any other way, but how do I tell her and not freak her out? Hell, I’m freaking out. She made it clear that she doesn’t play games, but this isn’t my fault. She had me pinned…

Elyse woke with the arm of the Captain around her waist, his hand resting on the curve of her hip. Her head laid on his chest. She made a sound that was more of a kitten’s mew.

Elijah looked down into her face. “Good morning, brat.”

Elyse’s sleep-fogged brain couldn’t comprehend his sarcasm, so she snuggled closer to his chest and sighed her contentment. Elyse’s eyes flew open when she realized her head lay on his chest and her proximity to him. She sat up, her hands splayed on the ground, and she stared into his gorgeous brown eyes. My breath. Her hand flew up to cover her mouth.

“I think I need a toothbrush,” she said.

He was stunned into silence as his eyes roamed her face, her tousled hair, loosened from her bun as she had slept, fell in soft waves to curl around the curves of her breast and hips. He gave a wry grin. “Not just any Kool-aid, grape Kool-aid. Fresh water when we can find it can be nasty. This covers the taste of the iodine pills we use to sanitize the water.”

He picked her bobby pins off his chest and the ground next to him and handed them to her. “You have ten minutes then we move out.”

“Seven men were ready within ten minutes. You took twice as long.” The Captain stated as she moved to pass him on the path.

“Girl. I had to brush my teeth, wash my face. Thank God Mountain had water. I had to fix my hair and eat another nasty C-ration. I thought I did pretty well.”

He grunted, rolling his eyes in response.

Leesa makes her home in the Twin Cities metro area with her husband and her two dogs Rosie and Jax.

When she isn’t writing she enjoys gardening, painting, and reading romance novels. She and her husband also enjoy movies, traveling, and entertaining their two grown children along with several beautiful grandchildren.
