It was the screams that woke Nancy.

They were bloodcurdling, gut-wrenching howls filled with nothing but pain. It was unlike anything Nancy had ever heard before.

Gasping for breath, Nancy’s eyes flew open. She pitched forward and peered around her with bleary eyes, trying to figure out which of her neighbors must have been shrieking … but instead of her ceiling and her warm blankets, she found herself lying in a heap on the side of a dirt road.

Above her, gray clouds swirled through the frigid night. Snowflakes drifted down and clung to her lashes and her hair.

Why was she outside? The last thing she remembered was diving into bed after Diana left.

Panic filled her as she rolled clumsily onto her arms and knees, finding her legs twisted and tangled in endless yards of fabric. It was only when she managed to drag herself to her feet by gripping a lantern-lit street post that she realized she was no longer in her Wonder Woman pajamas. She was dressed in a long-sleeved frock that swirled around her ankles. She grabbed at the thick fabric, tugging and pulling at it, until she realized that she was wearing some sort of antiquated dress and a petticoat.

“I must be dreaming,” Nancy whimpered, but she was hardly able to hear herself over the screams still echoing around her.

Her chest heaving, Nancy stumbled down the dirt road. She had to find someone, anyone, to tell her where she was and what was going on. This place was unrecognizable to her. There were only ten houses on this small road, as well as a building Nancy assumed was some sort of general store. There was also something almost familiar about the budding town, though Nancy could not put her finger on what it was—especially when she realized that flames licked up toward the sky from most of the buildings. Heat emanated from them, battling with the wintry chill of the air.

Nancy froze. She could only stare as the townspeople ran around wildly and begged for help. Suddenly, men on horses charged through the village, some swinging swords and guns while others aimed flaming arrows at people and homes.

“The outsiders are attacking!” someone screamed before getting cut down before Nancy’s very eyes.

“No … no!” shrieked Nancy. “Wake up, please! I don’t want to be here anymore!”

Tom fled through the forest, staying low to the ground, or as low as a person who stood over
six feet could manage without crawling. He needed to keep his feet because --
He flashed back to when the matriarch had cut off his left foot to keep him from escaping again.
It had grown back, of course. He was a dragon. Still, it had hurt, and he sometimes woke in the
middle of the night with phantom pain reminding him how he’d suffered.
He didn’t have a very good sense of direction, but it was a sunny day, early in the morning, and
the sun came up in the east. So, just as long as he kept the sun on his left, he’d assumed he’d be
generally heading south. Out of Canada. He’d grown up here but all he knew about the country
where he’d been imprisoned was that it was north of the United States.
He was grateful his shedding was over for another six months. His escape would have been
impossible while he was struggling through the twice-a-year loss of his scales.
He heard other dragons flying above him and huddled against a tree, hoping the darkness of his
skin would blend with the shadows. He wasn’t exactly dressed for a late December winter when
the temperatures around Nova Scotia lingered just above freezing most days. He wouldn’t
freeze to death… probably. As long as he kept moving, he’d be all right. Just now, though,
stillness was required. He shut his eyes, fearing that his anxiety had turned his irises yellow-
green. They might be spotted by someone with a searchlight.
He wondered briefly if the female dragons had employed some of their males to help. Most of
the males were treated better than he was, although not equal to the females. The large
majority would do as they were told because they weren’t required to stand stud all year, just
when the females wanted them.
Probably most of the other male dragons were grateful for his existence. He was an anomaly,
but one that the females liked. Bigger and stronger than any other dragon he’d ever met, he’d
been conditioned since birth. He’d been born larger and the hopes for his future progeny had
been high. Hell, they were still high even though only about one third of the dragons he sired
were of greater size when they were born. He’d only been at this enslavement stud service for
a year and a half, so none of his children were more than a year old.
It was as if, when the dragons and werewolves had split off from their basilisk parentage, they’d
been cursed to all stand at the exact same height in either human guise or scaly form. Five feet,
ten inches was the height of almost every other dragon he’d heard of when they walked on two
feet. With their talons and tails, they stood eight feet tall.

Tom was six-two sometimes, and others, he was ten feet tall. Being larger than most dragons
should have been an advantage. Having increased strength could have helped if there weren’t
so many damn males and females alike ready to take him down.
The sounds overhead faded and he hesitated, not wanting to leave his hiding place. Yet, what
good would it do him to stay here? They’d send out hunters on foot if necessary.
So, biting his lips almost hard enough to draw blood, he crept away from the tree and started
running again. He skirted around a meadow and kept going, adrenaline making him thirsty even
as it lent his muscles endurance.
The sun had been up for an hour before he judged it safe to stop and drink. He’d been hearing a
river nearby for about the last ten minutes and that burbling, overly cheery sound made him
long for water.
He broke from the game trail he’d been following and found an offshoot that led in the correct
direction. When he came upon the river, he was relieved to see a rocky bank where he could
get right down close to the water and drink his fill.
He crawled to the edge of the river, listening hard. He heard nothing except the twittering of
birds and the chittering of squirrels. Well, and the rushing of the water, of course. It was a deep
stream, not quite the river he’d been envisioning based on the amount of noise it was making.
He slipped his hands into the icy cold water.
Hands seized him roughly by his hair.
Without thought, he shifted to his scaly form to lose that grip. His clothes, rags now, fell away
as he tried for the sky.
Three dragons, brown and orange, like him, male, like him, each two feet smaller, crashed into
him. From below came a howl of triumph and something sharp sliced through his wing’s
membrane.
He screamed as he fell.

Best gay friend saves his girlfriend’s wedding from becoming a disaster

while adding a lot of his own fabulous flare

When Wendy is horribly abandoned by her fiancé Bruce just days before her dream wedding, her fabulous gay best friend Mitch steps in to help save the day! What happens next is a plethora of comical miscommunications that lead to one of the most colorful weddings of our time that would make even Martha Stewart proud as Mitch, along with his life partner Kevin and bigger than life friend Bob, rush to make Wendy’s dreams come true. And maybe even some of Mitch’s dreams?

Chapter Twenty-Three: Divine Intervention

The elderly priest had been looking forward to his mid-morning snack with the kind of anticipation usually reserved for Christmas morning. He'd assembled the perfect array of treats on his tray, humming contentedly as he made his way down the cathedral aisle.

That's when Wendy burst in, tears streaming down her face, and dove into the confessional.

The priest looked longingly at his snacks, then skyward with a resigned sigh. The Lord worked in mysterious ways, particularly when it came to interrupting a much needed snack

time.

"Father, forgive me, for I have sinned."

"You don't mind if I eat, do you?"

"Excuse me?"

"I haven't eaten all morning. I'm starving. Please, I

promise it won't interfere."

"Uh, okay... I mean, it is your house and all, so..."

"Thank you," he managed around a mouthful of

sandwich. "So, tell me my child, what is troubling you?"

"Well, I believe I may have caused my fiancé to

stumble."

"Hmmmm... How so?"

"By marrying my husband!"

The priest nearly choked on his snack. "By marrying your...? Wait! Didn't you marry your fiancé?"

"No. I married my best friend."

"Oh, that's lovely. One should always marry their best friend."

"But I was supposed to marry my fiancé."

"What's wrong with marrying your best friend?"

"Well, aside from the fact that he's gay, and already has a life partner, nothing I guess."

"Ah, so your fiancé is gay?"

"No, no. My husband is gay. My fiancé is straight."

"I see." (he didn’t) The priest set down his sandwich, sensing this might require his full attention.

"So, did you marry him to ummm... change him?"

"No, I married him because my fiancé told me to."

"Does your fiancé know that he's gay?"

"My fiancé isn't gay! My husband is gay!"

"Okay, okay. So… what was the question again?"

"I believe that my marrying Mitch..."

"The gay best friend..."

"Right."

The Priest was so proud of himself, "See, I'm catching on."

"Good. Now, I'm afraid that my marrying Mitch may have caused my fiancé, Bruce, to stumble. It was a joke, you know? I just wanted to go through with the wedding, and when Bruce wouldn't, Mitch said he would, so..."

"The stumbling part... let's get to the stumbling part.” He picked up his sandwich with empty high hopes.

"Right. Well, I found him with another woman!"

"I thought you said he was gay?"

"No. My husband's gay! Not my fiancé. Ya know, I thought you were catching on? Maybe you shouldn't be eating while we do this..."

The priest set down his food with a heavy sigh that suggested he was reconsidering his vocation.

"So, what should I do?"

He took a fortifying gulp of milk before delivering his verdict. "Go to him."

"Who? Which one?"

"Your gay husband. Your straight fiancé. Your second cousin’s lover! I don't care! Just go! Go to one of them. Go to both of them! Go to none of them, but please, I beg you -- just go! Oh, and you are forgiven!  Say ten Hail Mary’s and five Our Fathers.  Now Go! Go! Run like the wind!”

As Wendy left the confessional in a daze, the priest returned to his interrupted snack, making a mental note to suggest that the seminary add a course in modern relationship dynamics. Clearly, the traditional marriage counseling training wasn't covering all the bases anymore. At least the sandwich was good.

Though he had a feeling he'd need something stronger than milk to process this particular confession.

Early readers are already calling his latest novel 'an instant gay classic' with strong potential for adaptation as a Netflix limited series.

Roman Ballentyne is forced to make some changes. The city he loves is no longer safe. Tensions are high as a psychotic killer preys upon the LGBTQ community. Five men have been murdered in the last year. Every encounter is a risk. Anyone could be next. The Viaduct was once the shame of Blyham, an illicit club filled with private booths and dark rooms, sleazy in the extreme. Now it offers a secure space to hook up when it’s too dangerous to take a stranger home.

Mallon Garnier catches Roman’s eye. He’s moody and mature and the hottest man in the club, but as Mallon pairs up with someone else, Roman thinks he’s missed his chance. When Roman is the victim of a hate crime at the end of the night, Mallon is his saviour, taking on his attackers with savage efficiency. Their attraction is immediate and intense. Roman knows it’s wrong to go home with a stranger, but what harm can there be from the man who saved him?

The encounter is the start of an intense and passionate affair. But as the murders continue, Roman learns Mallon is keeping a deep secret, and the killer is closer than he thinks.

Roman stared at the man who had saved him as they drove away. He tried to speak, but there were no words. His throat was paralysed.

“Come on,” the stranger said. “Before their egos get the better of them and they circle around for another shot.”

“The police,” Roman gasped at last. “You called the police.”

“No. I didn’t have time. And it turns out, I didn’t need them.” He took a gentle grip of Roman’s arm and led him back down the road. “Come on. The New Inn will still be open. We need to get off the streets for now.”

The man walked fast. Roman had trouble keeping up with him and couldn’t stop from looking over his shoulder to see if his attackers were following. The road was clear.

“Thank you,” he said at last. Now that the shock of the ordeal was sinking in, he felt a growing weakness all through his body. I could have died there. At best he’d have faced a trip to the hospital to fix several broken bones. Those men had been serious, and though he hadn’t paid attention to all the hate crimes that had occurred in Blyham, he knew how badly beaten the survivors had been. And five men hadn’t been lucky at all.

“Mallon,” the man said. “My name is Mallon. I couldn’t stand by and watch them get away with that.”

“Thank you,” he repeated. “I’m Roman. How…how did you do that? There were three of them. That could easily have ended differently.”

“Boxing. Boot camps. I’ve been a fighter since I was a boy.”

The New Inn was fifty yards ahead. Roman saw a group of customers outside, and relief rushed through him. People. His kind of people. They were safe—for now, at least.

He glanced at Mallon as they walked. His gaze was fixed in front. A man with purpose and determination. His expression was deadly serious, his jaw taut.

The New Inn was the most traditional of the bars in the village, with old wooden floors and dark wood panelling. The long, original bar led through to a more recent extension and conservatory with a beer garden. The DJ played a selection of songs from the 1970s and ’80s, while the clientele of older gays stood around chatting. The bar area was packed. Mallon guided Roman through the crowd to the near-empty beer garden. Efficient heaters kept the night chill at bay.

“Stay here,” Mallon said, releasing his arm once Roman was seated. “What do you want to drink?”

“Vodka. Diet Coke.”

Mallon nodded and left him.

Roman wrapped his arms around himself and shivered, despite the warmth. Fuck. He’d never experienced anything as frightening in his entire life. Like any gay man, he was used to homophobia, but the abuse he’d experienced in the past had always been verbal—name calling and hateful comments. This was the first time he’d been threatened with physical danger. And if Mallon hadn’t turned up when he did? Roman shuddered and his heart raced again.

First thing I want to say is pay attention to trigger warnings on this book. For some, this might not be the book for you if you are sensitive to violence against LGBTQ+. If you are okay reading it, then pick this one up. The blurb builds up the book that it will have a lot of mystery, suspense, and intrigue, and while it does have some of that, I sort of wished there was more. Now, don't get me wrong, the story line and characters are great. Character development had me turning page after page, wanting to see what happened next. But I just felt like there could have been more development on the mystery end as well as the relationship between Mallon and Roman. The steam and heat is off the charts. The characters are great and get better as the story progresses, but something seemed a little lacking. I wanted more. That said, it's still a really great book and I highly recommend it. 4 stars.
