Book Blitz: Rough Stock by Deanndra Hall

Title: Rough Stock (Small Town Southern Boys, #3)

Author: Deanndra Hall

Genre: Small Town Western Romance/Later in Life Romance

Hosted by: Buoni Amici Press, LLC.

Positions as an instructor and rodeo coach at the local university in South Carolina aren’t enough to keep Jensen Strader in town after he’s abandoned at the altar, so he grabs a trailer and his horses and heads out on the rodeo circuit. Buckles? Sure, he’d love a few. Buckle bunnies? Not interested.

That changes when he meets Shyanna Owens. She’s been picked on, spat on, cussed out, slapped, and punched by people who were supposed to love her, and by male competitors who feel threatened by her. All she wants to do is ride bulls and broncs, and she’s made it clear that no one will run her off. She’s never been tossed one scrap of respect as a human being. Fortunately, she finds a different kind of cowboy in the kind, gentlemanly Jensen. Together, they form the perfect team … and the perfect couple. It’s an alliance that buys Shyanna friends and camaraderie within the rodeo association, safety, and a love that’s true and deep.

But just as Shyanna begins to get the recognition and respect she deserves, one of them stumbles into something dangerous and sinister within the association. It’s no longer about competition. It’s about bitterness and corruption on a collision course with death, and it could stop the beating heart of their relationship unless a determined rough stock rider has her way.

Well, you know what they say: Cowgirl up, ladies—the rodeo is coming to town.

The Small Town Southern Boys series is a collection of independent novels, each in a different southern state with its own flavor and designed so you can jump in anywhere. Discover a world of hunky home-town sexiness that just won’t quit and see for yourself why the temperature’s always hellahot when there’s a drawl coming from those lips with a slow, charming smile.

“Hey,” he said, using his friendliest tone, “I haven’t seen you around. My name’s Jensen Strader.” He extended his hand and waited.

She glanced at his gesture and ignored it as she growled, “Whaddya want?”

Jensen pulled his hand back, afraid she might slap at it. “Just wanted to say hello. I try to get to know as many of the guys on the circuit as I can.”

“Do I look like a fucking guy to you?” she snapped, then took another sip of whiskey.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like … Look, I just wanted to come and say hello, welcome you to the circuit, that’s all. Sorry if I bothered you,” he said. The bartender brought his bottle and he decided maybe it was time to give up and move away. She obviously wasn’t interested in getting to know anyone, and he couldn’t blame her after some of the stories he’d heard.

Just as he turned to go, he heard her say, “Yeah. Run. Just like all the rest of these fucking yellow-bellied cowards.”

A frisson of fury bolted through Jensen’s body as he spun back toward her. “I’m anything but a coward, but if you’ve got to be so god damn rude, I’m leaving. I’ve learned over the years that there are some people you just can’t be nice to because they’re such assholes.”

“So now I’m an asshole?” she asked, but there was a different quality to her voice. It almost sounded like she found it funny.

“I dunno. Do you wanna be an asshole? Because if you don’t, there are some things you should change pretty fucking fast,” he pointed out.

“Maybe I do. Maybe I don’t. You know who I am. Why the hell would you come over here? Do your little friends over there know where you are?” she asked, tossing her head toward the other guys.

“Oh, yeah. They told me not to come over here but, of course, I ignored them. I’m my own dog. I don’t usually take cues from the people around me, especially if they’re fucking yellow-bellied cowards,” Jensen quipped.

To his shock, a tiny smile turned up the corners of her mouth. “How would they take to you calling them that?”

“If it’s true? Don’t see that they’d have a say in it,” he said, trying hard not to chuckle.

“And you’d take a punch for that?”

“Fuck yeah,” he answered. The only thing he couldn’t fight was the grin that spread across his face.

For the first time since he’d been standing there, she looked up at him and grinned herself. He was shocked again when she held out her hand. “Shyanna Owens.”

The grip she gave him when he took it was a surprise―firm and yet soft. “Nice to meet you.”

PERSETTA

Lost until HIM
I thought the night fate brought us together was the worst night of my life.
I was wrong.
Blinded and with no memory, how was I supposed to know any better?
He’s cold-blooded, cunning, and dangerous—the head of the French mafia.
He’s everything I shouldn’t want in a man, but I do.
For my safety, I have to seduce him.
Instead, with every threat, he’s the one who draws me further into his web.
It’s so easy to fall into his arms as my demons slowly release from their cages.
I feel safe with him.
Until I remember the truth.

ADRIEN

Broken until HER
I walled off my shredded soul and black heart long ago.
No one ever gets in anymore, and yet my guard lowered for her.
She stole away on my boat, injured and with no memories.
The only clue to who she once was—a tattoo on her calf.
This woman. She’s my past. My present. My future.
The one who got away, in more than one sense.
Years ago, I broke our families’ alliance and turned my back on her.
Last night, I was hired to kill her.
My little survivor. My butterfly. If only I recognized her…

Just like yesterday, his palm pressed against my throat, but this time he didn’t squeeze. His thumb brushed up and down over my pulse point. His skin trembled against my own—warm, firm, unyielding, and yet somehow vulnerable too. Maybe that was what drew me to him, because it wasn’t rational how much I wanted him closer, his arms around me, his body against mine.

We were suspended like that for seconds…minutes. It could have been hours. Somehow deep inside, I felt protected for the first time in forever. It didn’t make sense. It didn’t have to, but in my jailer’s arms, in this moment, the void melted away and lightness spread. I wanted more, but the instant I reached for him, before I even touched him, he jerked away.

He cleared his throat.

“Never ask that of me again.”

“Or what?”

He stomped across the room and threw the door open so hard it crashed against the wall and skittered back in scattered croaks.

A strangled laugh choked out of me. Pain shot up my side, and tears seeped under my eye dressings. None of this was funny, but his switch in moods was giving me whiplash, especially after the lightness of that memory.

“You don’t possess a touch of sunshine, do you? You’re angry. Tormented, so you hide behind violence thinking it makes you so tough, but you’re nothing but a big ol’ grump, trying to spread his own misery.”

“You know nothing about me.”

He didn’t stick around for my rebuttal. The door battered the frame on his way out, and the lock clicked loudly into place. His absence left me lonelier than before, and I wasn’t quite sure how to feel about that. One thing I was almost certain of though. He didn’t really want to kill me. The next time I saw him, I’d put that to the test.

But Vivian is glad she moved to Portland with her ex. She’s glad he left her for someone who lives in the city she moved from, because she can now eat her feelings and those feelings taste like wine, tacos, pastries, and gourmet ice cream.

She’s even happy when her newly-engaged sister informs her that she’s hired the toughest personal trainer in town to whip Vivian back into shape for her wedding, because it finally brings her face-to-face with that one big regret—her former best friend from high school.

Notorious crime boss Saoirse Kennedy finds herself entangled in a web of mystery when she receives orders to eliminate a detective and faces the resurgence of her haunting past.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

Two more men were already waiting for her in the large entry hall, dressed the same as the guards outside, pointing their guns at her.

Saoirse smiled her best cheerful smile, raising her hands in resignation and slowly advancing toward them with carefree steps. “Now, boys, that’s no way to ask a lady to have tea.”

As expected, they barely responded with more than a low growl.

“All I want to do is talk to Garrison. Look, I didn’t even bring a gun.” She gestured to her hips, clad in tight black jeans, wearing an equally tight leather jacket over her olive-green T-shirt.

Her having come unarmed obviously came as a surprise to the guards, because for just a moment, they glanced at one another in an attempt at wordless communication. That rookie mistake was all Saoirse needed. She dashed forward, keeping her body low, and ducked underneath the gun one of them was holding, ramming her head into his ribs. He not only stumbled backward, but he fell, his gun clattering onto the floor. By the time it was in Saoirse’s hands, the other man’s gun was pointed at her again, while hers was aimed at him. However, after a moment’s reflection, she moved it from him to the unarmed man on the floor.

Still smiling, she tilted her head to one side. “I’m sure your boss wouldn’t care if I killed him. But would you? Willing to risk it?” She paused to let her words sink in. Then she repeated her earlier statement. “All I want to do is talk to Garrison. Are you gonna let me go up those stairs, or does he need to die first?”

Her eyes were on his, unblinking and firm. Now it all depended on whether he knew who she was. Though, judging by his glance from her to his partner on the ground, he had a fair idea. Excruciatingly slowly, he lowered both his gun and head.

“There’s a good boy.” Saoirse beamed at him and pranced past him and up the stairs. Except for the guy manning the computers, Garrison wouldn’t have any more security in the building. He didn’t like having too many people around. It made things too confusing, and it lost a significant amount of class.

She had barely made it to the first landing, when she heard the click of a gun’s safety. Dropping her body to the ground immediately, she twisted and fired. The guard’s shot missed her by several meters as her own hitting his arm threw off his aim. Instead of retaliating further, Saoirse sprinted up the last steps of the stairs, and determinedly kicked down the door to what she knew to be Garrison’s office. He wouldn’t change it. Not when it had the perfect view across his grounds and ideal lighting from its positioning.

She was right.

He sat at his desk, facing the door, looking very grave.

“Saoirse,” he said, his tone level. He wore a navy suit today, and a light grey, almost silver tie. His brown hair was brushed and perfectly parted at the side, and his beard neatly trimmed. His hands were clasped together, his elbows stemmed on the table.

“Hello, Luis, old chap,” Saoirse responded. “Mind if we have an uninterrupted chat?”

The boys were laughing their asses off when I made it back to the table. Packy pointed at me. “Was that how you wanted it to go, or should we start your injured reserve paperwork?”

Even Logan was chuckling. “He was out there doing God’s work. For about twelve seconds.”

Holky slung an arm around my shoulders. “Don’t worry, bud. You died with honor.”

We spilled out onto the sidewalk half an hour later, a little drunk and way too loud. It was warm for April, which eased the pain of waiting while our Ubers were caught in traffic. Not long ago, leaving without a woman would’ve bummed me out, but tonight, I was glad it was just the guys.

Logan nudged me. “You okay after all that?”

“I’m fine.” I looked away, hoping he’d stop there, but I could feel his eyes on me. After a second, I lowered my voice. “It was all for show.”

“I know. What would you have done if she’d said yes?”

“Faked a seizure? Climbed out the bathroom window?”

He leaned closer. “You’re playing a dangerous game.”
Well-written, really good story that will keep you hooked, and characters that are very memorable. I loved this book. There were times when I had a hard time with the book because it felt as if it dragged, but overall, I really liked everything about this. I kept turning the page and it kept pulling me in. The character development is spot on as well as the writing. I highly recommend this one. 4 stars.
