And if Emery stops him . . . she might lose the man she’s fallen for.

Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t losing the game.

It’s losing what you never thought you wanted.

This was a solid 4-star read for me. The Backup Plan follows Emery Porter, who’s looking for a fresh start, and Lucas Hale, a veteran quarterback fighting for one last shot to prove he still belongs in the game. When Emery lands a job with the Lone Star Rebels, it feels like exactly the reset she needs—but Lucas’s career (and future) is hanging by a thread after a serious shoulder injury.

Their chance encounter on their first night in town definitely wasn’t part of the plan, but of course, that’s where things start to unravel—in the best way. I really enjoyed how both characters had strong motivations and something real to prove. Emery is grounded and firm in her professional boundaries, while Lucas is driven (and honestly a little desperate) to hold onto the only life he’s ever known. That tension between them—personal and professional—kept things interesting throughout.

And when they finally give in to their feelings? It’s spicy and completely worth the buildup.

Overall, this is a great pick if you like sports romances with high tension, strong character motivation, and a satisfying dose of heat.
