“Siam, are you listening to me?” Robert Willis, the person my parents kept pushing at me, asked.

“Huh?” I’d been caught daydreaming or whatever again. The guy was the most boring human in the known universe. Brown hair, brown eyes, tan skin, dressed in a white button-up shirt, khaki Dockers, and brown shoes. Thinking about it, I doubted he owned anything that wasn’t brown, white, black, or blue. Such a plethora of choices. Bleh! “I apologize, Robert. I have a Spanish test tomorrow and was trying to recall what to review.”

“If you need help with Spanish, I can tutor you.”

Smiling coyly, I patted his chest. “I’m okay. Tests just make me nervous.” It was well known that I was a straight-A student and had the highest grade out of all the Spanish classes in our school. I was fluent in Russian, Spanish, German, Italian, and French—a fact I kept to myself because I wasn’t sure about the reaction I would get. I walked a very tight line in my new life, and I didn’t want to tip the scales. I had to bide my time and strike when I was ready. Not a moment sooner, and I could not allow anyone to interfere.

“Are you sure? I wouldn’t mind helping you. It would allow me to review as well.” Ah, there it was. It wasn’t that he wanted to assist me, but he needed my help. I shouldn’t have been surprised; everyone had an angle, and humans seemed to play them more than shifters.

“Oh, well, if you think it would help you too, then sure. You can come over, and we can study after we are done here.” I had been forced to go shopping with him to pick out his tux and my dress for homecoming. Yay me!

So far, I had found fault with every dress. Too tight. Too loose. Too much sparkle. Not enough sparkle. Too many flowers. I detested flower prints, and of course, Robert picked out that particular dress. He was convinced that he would not be able to pick out his tux until I picked my dress. I wasn’t sure how that worked since he could just get basic black, but who was I to judge his fashion choices. Not like he truly cared about fashion or clothes, which brought me back to why couldn’t he just get a basic black tux?

I was at the point when I was about to just pick the one that bothered me the least when I smelled it. Something sweet and alluring. It wasn’t my brother Dimitri, but it was something else, something more. Mate! My animal called out to me. Mate? I was only sixteen. But it had to be. The smell drew me in.
SNOW
As a young boy, abandoned by my parents and ripped apart from my twin sister, I learned early on that the world was full of evil and hate. I survived by living between the light and darkness, using my shifter abilities to stay alive…until one mistake should have cost me my life. Instead, it became my salvation and gave me a family and band of brothers who had my back no matter what. The Dark Leopards MC was not a gang to be trifled with, and many gave us a wide birth, and as the Sergeant At Arms, I ensured that’s the way it stayed. But someone was trying to encroach on our territory and begin a war.

I suspect the woman I saved, the woman whom I discover is my mate, is tied to it all somehow. I just have to figure out the puzzle before it’s too late.

VERITY
I was only trying to help a friend. The last thing I ever thought is that my friend would try to kidnap me, but thankfully someone or something saved me. Rushing to meet my roommate, Siam, I got another shock when the gang responsible for my brother’s death are her friends. I didn’t care if her brother had mesmerizing eyes or if I had a hard time not thinking about him. He was the enemy!

But even as my enemy, he may be my only chance to stay alive and learn the truth. And if Snow is the one protecting me in and out of bed, I wouldn’t complain too much.

Fast forward and I’m waking up the next morning in some stranger’s house with a half-naked man coming out of a bathroom. Awkward. And it so happens to be the Alpha’s son, Reed Stone. Right off the bat, he knows I’m trouble with a capital T since there haven’t been any humans turned into supes since supernaturals were outed five years ago. “This is Dr. Jensen.” I answer the call that my office manager and best friend put on hold for me.

“Dr. Jensen, this is Lieutenant Vasquez with Colton P.D. I oversee our K-9 Unit. A month ago one of our dogs was shot on-duty and he’s still recovering from the shoulder injury, both mentally and physically.”

“Ah, yes, that was Blue, wasn’t it?”

“Yes, it was.”

“What can I help you with, Lieutenant?”

“Well, Blue and his handler, Sergeant Sam Wolfe, will be staying in Bliss Cay this summer for a much needed vacation. Since Blue is still under the care of our local Vet for his injury and PTSD, he’ll need to continue his course of treatment while there. Dr. Jensen, you came highly recommended, and I’m hoping you’ll take point with his care while in Bliss.”

It’s not often I’m speechless, but this is one of those times. Sam Wolfe is coming to Bliss and his boss wants me to take over his dog’s care…for two long months? I’m supposed to be in the same tiny room with my past all summer?

“Dr. Jensen, you still there? Hello?”

“I—I’m here. Sorry, one of my patients got loose.”

“Would you rather call me back?”

“No, no, it’s fine. I got her.” I say, closing my eyes and shaking my head after lying to the police. It was only a little white lie, right? Get it together, Isla.

“So, what do you say? Will you help a police dog in need?”

How can I say no when he puts it like that? Plus…it’s Sam’s dog. “I’ll do it.” I blurt out before changing my mind.

“Wonderful! We really appreciate your assistance. I have to tell you, Blue’s had a pretty rough time the last month, not to mention Sergeant Wolfe. Since the shooting, the two have been inseparable.”

“Really, it’s no problem at all. It’s my job and I’m happy to help in any way I can. So, uh, when will Sergeant Wolfe and Blue be arriving in Bliss?”

“They’ll be there Sunday—and if it’s okay, Sam will stop by your office on Monday to meet you and go over a treatment schedule that works for everyone.”

“So—Sergeant Wolfe doesn’t know I’ll be caring for Blue while they’re here?” I don’t know why I even asked that, it’s unlikely he knows my married name.

“Well, he knows of you, but I wanted to get your approval before I told him you agreed to take Blue on as a patient. I know he’ll be relieved since I mentioned your credentials. He loves that dog as much as he loves his son.”

Son? Sam has a kid? My pulse accelerates at the realization. Clearing my throat, I ask, “I assume his family will be joining him for the summer?” Thump-thump, thump-thump, my heart pounds in my chest. He’s your past Isla.

TANIEL

I GET TO THE OFFICE AND DO MY USUAL routine: drop off Cassandra’s coffee, hang her dry cleaning in her office closet, start to set up her morning schedule and sync it to my own, then go through the emails. The contract for Twisted Souls is at the top of the list. I set it to print and head back to the printer room to retrieve it. When I get there, I find Kim, Jack’s admin, leaning against the copier in this tight as all hell pencil skirt with a high side slit that shows off her long legs. I can’t help but notice as she is sorta rocking it.

“Hey there, handsome.” She smirks, turning toward me. I look around, confused. Is she actually coming at me like that?

“Uh, hi. I need the printer.” I try and get past her, but she blocks my way.

“We got this pool going, see, the rumor is you're gay, but then I heard Jack say you’re doing Cassandra… So, tell me, because I’d like to win. Do you like pussy?”

My mouth hangs open as she undoes the top button of her blouse, exposing the black lace of her push-up bra and looking up at me with her deep green eyes. Standing up on her tiptoes, she kisses me! Her tongue slips into my mouth and for an instant, I forget where I am. She tastes like cherries. Her fingers fist into my hair and my dick twitches before I push her off.

“I- I can’t do this, Kim. Shit.” I turn from her. “Fuck, are you trying to get us fired?” I look around and see Jessica and Trish. They’re both laughing as I grab the files from the printer and covering my hardon, hastily make my way back to my desk. I hear Kim exclaim proudly that I’m definitely straight.

Fuck, now what do I do? They all saw that, saw her kiss me! The rumors are gonna fly and what’s worse is I kissed back! God damn it, I gotta tell Cassandra. She can’t hear it any other way, but how do I tell her and not freak her out? Hell, I’m freaking out. She made it clear that she doesn’t play games, but this isn’t my fault. She had me pinned…

Three senior girls in rural Alaska escape their abusive pasts by raising their dyke flag for themselves and their community.

Crystal Rose woke up at three in the morning today, drenched in sweat and breathless after another sex dream with Haley Carson. Later at school in the tiny town of Clear, Alaska, Crystal saves Haley from an assault by her abusive boyfriend.

The two girls renew a love started years ago that had to stay hidden until now. But with Crystal’s grandparents in the hospital with Covid and the possibility of her drug addict parents returning from a 14-year absence, Crystal needs Haley as much as she needs Crystal.

They connect with Payton Reed, a gun-toting artist who helps them feel proud to be gay and willing to stand up to anyone. Together they struggle to make Crystal’s house safe for those who are hated for their love.

Crystal’s room is small with drawings and photos stuck randomly all over the walls—closeups of leaves, flowers, and berries; intricate natural designs created by Labrador tea, spider webs, and lichen; every local animal, including a grizzly sow and two cubs digging through trashcans from this past June; sunrises and sunsets plus northern lights; and, of course, line drawings of her house and family, along with pages of self-portraits. Crystal’s entire world greets her every morning and evening. Nothing is ever removed or covered, just added to, now up one corner of the ceiling. A large white board on one wall displays a self-portrait drawing of Crystal sitting.

Haley stands in the doorway, open-mouthed, trying to absorb it all. “Damn, Crystal, you are something. I love this.”

Crystal smiles. “I’m glad. So do I.” She opens her closet to show Haley her clothing options, including a never-worn pair of stretch jeans Crystal bought at Value Village in Fairbanks—a size too big for her, but a size too small for Haley.

“I’m not sure my butt can fit into these,” says Haley, holding the pair waist high. “You’ll have fun watching me put these on.”

“Oooh, do I get to watch?”

“Certainly.” Haley raises a brow and half smiles as she pulls off her sweatshirt.

Crystal’s breath catches in her chest as her mouth gapes open.

“Oops! I forgot to pick out a shirt. Can I use your robe until I find something suitable?”

Crystal’s face reddens. “Sure.” She removes her robe and tosses it to Haley, who then tosses it on the bed. “Now we can stare at each other.”

Crystal licks her lips. “You are so evil.”

“I’m just getting started.” She tilts her head and cocks a brow. “Do you like evil?”

“So far.” Though she’s afraid her heart will burst, it’s beating so fast.

“Great.” Haley moves toward Crystal until their chests touch. “I love your drawing on the white board. Would you do another of me? Maybe one of us kissing?” Haley touches her lips to Crystal’s.

“Yes.” She struggles trying to pull her phone out of her pocket while Haley rubs her tongue tip over Crystal’s bottom lip. Gasping for air, Crystal asks, “Do you want me to take a pic or not?” Haley smiles and steps back a little. Crystal props her phone against the mirror on her dresser and sets the timer. “We have five seconds.”

Haley moves her hand to Crystal’s neck as they kiss. The camera takes the picture, but they don’t separate.

After a few more seconds, Haley pulls back just enough to speak. “You are the best kisser. Even in fifth grade I liked kissing you. Think of all that time I wasted.”

“We have plenty of time now.” She grabs her phone and shows Haley the photo. “I like that. I can draw it now, if you want.”

“Yes, please.”

“Hold it for me.” Crystal takes her drawing pad and pen from her desk and sits in her chair.

Haley holds the phone against her cleavage, her boobs hanging over her arms. “Is that good?”

Crystal stares and shakes her head. “Evil. Pure evil!”

“Just focus on the photo, Crystal.” Haley slowly sways her torso, making her boobs jiggle close to Crystal’s face. “Can’t you focus?” Her voice drips with seduction.

Crystal clears her throat and closes her eyes. “I think I can. I think I can.” She takes a deep breath, opens her eyes, and places her pen on the paper. Haley sways faster. Crystal starts a line then runs it off the page. “Can you please stop moving?” she pleads, unable to turn away from Haley’s breasts. “Just for a few minutes?” She rips off the page and readies another.

Her voice coy, sweet, and sultry—“As you wish. I’ll stand perfectly still.” She holds the camera away from her body, partially covering her breasts.

Crystal starts a line under her chin, sweeps down to make hair, then her face and lips before moving to Haley’s lips, hair, and then ending with her hand. She stares at the drawing for a few seconds then turns it around. “What do you think?”

“Oh, my god! I love it. We look good together.” She gives Crystal a kiss. “Thank you. Thank you.”

Brooke Skipstone is a multi-award-winning author who lives in Alaska where she watches the mountains change colors with the seasons from her balcony. Where she feels the constant rush toward winter as the sunlight wanes for six months of the year, seven minutes each day, bringing crushing cold that lingers even as the sun climbs again. Where the burst of life during summer is urgent under twenty-four-hour daylight, lush and decadent. Where fish swim hundreds of miles up rivers past bear claws and nets and wheels and lines of rubber-clad combat fishers, arriving humped and ragged, dying as they spawn. Where danger from the land and its animals exhilarates the senses, forcing her to appreciate the difference between life and death. Where the edge between is sometimes too alluring.

Crystal’s House of Queers is her third novel.
