The writing is the quality I am used to from Ms. Van Dyken. The characters are raw and gritty. The storyline was a tough one to write about (foster girl with great looks moves into the house with Mr. Perfect), but the usual captivating and emotionally gripping parts were missing for me in this one. There are definitely parts that get right to it (when you read it, you will know what I mean).
I will say that while this may not rate as one of my faves, it is still a decent enough read for fans of this genre and I look forward to more stories from this author.
Mary Belle has been in the foster system. The latest was to a wealthy woman and things are starting to look better for her until she suddenly dies. Now she is taken in by the woman’s sister and her family. A very wealthy family. Mary Belle is trying to navigate this new life and her mounting attraction to Ambrose (her stepbrother (of sorts?)).
Ambrose is expected to portray a perfect image. It weighs on him heavily. But Mary Belle's arrival has him re-evaluating his life.
But an unexpected tragedy strikes again and leaves Mary Belle and Ambrose at odds. Now Mary Belle is growing close to Ambrose’s former best friend, Quinn.
The bones of this story are great. The execution left this story lacking for me. I felt like the main characters were back and forth on their feelings and actions. It lacked the depth that I was looking for. I was grateful for the jump into action in the beginning and not dragging out the story. Unfortunately, this was not my favorite book by RVD.
I really wanted to love this book. It has a lot of twists and turns. While some of them were not my cup of tea, the storyline was interesting and kept me reading till the end.
