Release Blitz: Dear Love, I Hate You by Eliah Greenwood

Release Date: March 12

It all started with an anonymous letter.

He wasn’t supposed to find it—no one was.
And he definitely wasn’t supposed to answer it.

We end up talking through letters and sticky notes in a book. One sticky note. Two sticky notes. Ten sticky notes. All baring our darkest, deepest secrets.

It’s all fun and games until I find out who my pen pal is...
Xavier Emery. King of my basketball-obsessed town, my childhood bully, and the guy I am in grave danger of falling in love with.

But the rules were clear: we can never know who we’re talking to, and the confessions can never, ever get out. Seriously. It would destroy lives.

Fine by me. Even if Mr. Popular does find out his confidant is little old me, it’s not like he’d ever love me back…

Right?

Vee writes a hate letter to her teacher, but forgets it in a book. A library book. Before she knows it, she's in a pen pal situation trading secrets with the boy who found her letter.  They seem to be falling for each other, but what will happen when they find out who they really are?

I liked the secret pen pal premise, and the story kept me engaged. I wanted to shake the characters a few times, but this book really was great. The characters were believable and likeable.

There's some deep topics in this book. You should definitely read it to see for yourself!

Aveena writes out a letter that no one was supposed to see. A smoke bomb and fire drill had her leaving her note sitting in a book. On Monday, she searches for it, can't find it and is only mildly relieved that she anonymously signed it.

The next time she looks, she finds a letter/reply in its place. Thus begins anonymous letters telling deep and dark secrets. Secrets that have the potential to harm. Along the lines Aveena figures out that he anonymous letter writer is none other than the famous football playing classmate Xavier.

All of Aveena's misconceptions of Xavier go out the window as they begin to learn about each other. But someone has found the letters and posted them for the whole school to see.

So what happens? You'll have to one-click to find out.

I liked the idea of this story but I don't think the high school genre is for me. Some of the situations seemed outlandish (too adult) to me and not something I could/would have done.

Who hasn't wanted to vent about a teacher a time or two? Think of it: you are back in high school and a teacher really gets on your nerves... you can't stand them or maybe something they did. So, rather than acting out physically and getting yourself in trouble, you write your emotions on paper. Well, that's what our high school heroine does. But, she forgets it in a book. Then, when she returns for the book, she finds a response to her letter!

This story was engaging. I did enjoy the overall storytelling, the characters, the emotions, and the drama. It did hold my interest. And while I absolutely would recommend this quick read to anyone who is a fan of high school romance, I do not think it was for me. That is not to say this author didn't write a fantastic story. She did! But, I did think many of the behaviors and situations were a bit too mature or a tad unrealistic (and yes, I know this is fiction) for the age our characters were supposed to be.

Great writing! Wonderful storytelling. Beautiful emotions. I give this one a solid 3.5 stars.
