Who needs love when you have money?
It used to be enough, but now it’s not.
Not since he walked into my life and made me question everything.
Now I want more, but I know that’s impossible.
Things aren’t always as they seem.
My true self is hidden, and that works for me.
Or it did.
I hide in a bed of deception to disguise myself, and I’m good at it.
Or I was.
I’m Elizabeth Fitzgerald.
I’m a Senator’s wife.
And I hate my life.
After a few minutes, he says, “I know there’s more to you, Elizabeth. I can tell there’s someone hidden inside you dying to come out. I can see it in the fake smile you show everyone, including Cal, the way you frown when you’re alone in your thoughts, and the sadness that’s lurking in your eyes. Why are you hiding?”
God help me, but there’s something in the way he speaks to me that makes me want to lay all my secrets and sins bare. He’s soft and gentle, but most importantly, I believe he wants to know more about me. He’s not asking to gain leverage or use it to his advantage, he’s genuinely concerned. And it makes me want to tell him everything. But the rational side of my brain tells me not to, so I reel in this strange impulse to divulge my secrets to a man I hardly know.
Hidden in Lies is book 1 in the Lies and Truth Series by Rachael Duncan. What a way to start a series, this book has everything that you could possibly look for in an intriguing story that will keep you wanting for more with ever page that you turn; half truths and lies told at every turn, politics, love, yearning, family and oh the angst. This was a 4 star read for me and I am patiently (or maybe not so patiently) anticipating the next book. I highly recommend this book because I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
Elizabeth learned from an early age that marrying for love, isn't the type of life that she should want for herself. Her mother ingrained in her a belief that love won't keep a roof over your head, food on the table or the bills paid, but money will. A mantra that Elizabeth seems to have adapted at the start of the story. She is married to a Senator, from a wealthy family of old money, but Cal isn't someone that she loves or even likes, he is someone that she tolerates and pretends to stand by, as he has all the money and the power and she has nothing. With the need to help her family she stays with him even though she knows that there has to be more to to life, wondering if she deserve happiness and to actually fall in love with a man who will treat her like an equal, not like a possession to tote around for a photo op.
Elizabeth begins to question the choices she has made even more than she did before with the appearance of Alex in her life. He is ex-military (swoon) who is now a body guard and he is hired to ensure Elizabeth's safety after a break in at her mansion on afternoon while she is lunching with her "friend". Alex is a calming force that sees the worth that Elizabeth has from the first moment that he lays eyes on her and makes sure to show her in little ways everyday that she doesn't need to put up with the way that Cal treats her, that she deserves better than to simply be arm candy for his political aspirations but Elizabeth knows better and the fate of her mother's life is the price she has to pay for giving up any resemblance of a happy life.
After Cal admits that he is cheating on her and that there is nothing she can do to stop him besides continuing to be the dutiful wife that she has always been, Elizabeth begins to turn toward Alex in a much different way, no longer hiding the feelings that he stirs inside her. It is when she finally receives news that she has longed to hear for so long that she decides now is the time to leave Cal, regardless of his candidacy for president of the United States. It's while she is packing her bags and Alex is at the bank that Cal shows her his true colors, even more so than the time he slapped her and the ground falls from underneath her. The reader wonder what will happen with Alex and Elizabeth?
And that CLIFF HANGER! Rachael Duncan really?? How could you leave me hanging like that? I cannot wait to find out if Alex and Elizabeth end up together, if they can fight their way through the shit storm that has landed at their feet. And will Elizabeth still want to be with Alex when she finds out the truth?
